Tiles in Porto

Tiles were used to keep out the damp in the port city

3-4 June - Porto

Arrived at Frankfurt airport on my way to Porto. The airport is a hub airport with planes going all over Europe and the world. Thank goodness I had booked my luggage through to Porto. Going through security was long and the search very thorough, feeling every crevice in my body. The security check at OR Tambo was poor in comparison, the lady even read a brochure when she should have been looking at the X-rays. The airport has many people all rushing somewhere or other.

Bought toothpaste and toothbrush at a delicatessen to get a fresh feeling. Lufthansa did not provide socks or toothpaste, etc. In the past you were not permitted to take them on the plane, now it must obviously be permitted.

Nearly missed my flight to Porto. My boarding ticket issued in Johannesburg said A23 but when I went to board at the correct time, the plane was going to Paris. Spoke to the official, and had to go to gate B19. Now on my way to Porto. The land below looks full of towns, fields, forests, and wind turbines.

Took a shuttle bus 602 from the airport to the old town centre where I am staying in the Poets Hostel. Clean dormitory with 4 beds.

Went out and saw the Igreja dos Carmelitas and the next-door Igreja do Carmo with the beautiful tiled wall and old chairs inside.

Went up a tower for a view of the city

Saw a pharmacy with healing herbs

1-2 June 2013 - Flight

Left Cape Town in stormy winter weather. Johannesburg airport was sunny and warm. Lufthansa's flight from Johannesburg to Frankfurt was wonderful. 560 seater plane was not full and I had nobody next to me. Different from previous national flights - no socks, toothpaste, or earplugs were provided.

31 May 2013 - Preparation

Two more sleeps, then off I go, on my own, to travel for a month in lands where I do not know the language and have a gamy foot. Well, I am a big girl and will put fears aside and trust in ... my fellow man, people I meet on the plane, hostel and on the Way.
